Material Science: Ceramic Zirconia vs Grade 4/5 Titanium
Grade 4 and Grade 5 titanium alloys have been the gold standard in implantology since the 1960s with a 95% to 98% 10-year success rate. However, patients with thin gum biotypes or metal sensitivities increasingly choose monolithic ceramic Zirconia (Zirconium Dioxide) implants. Zirconia is completely metal-free, naturally tooth-colored (eliminating dark gray shadows through translucent gums), and exhibits lower bacterial plaque adhesion. Because manufacturing and placing zirconia requires specialized surgical kits, zirconia implants cost $800 to $1,500 more per tooth than titanium.
